We all know what North American Halloween is like with all the candy, orange and black, costumes and pumpkins; but in case you didn’t know, this date is actually referred to as many different things, for many different cultures. In many cultures, Halloween is a time of year when the realms between the spirit world and the living is very thin. It is the time of year for remembering those who have left the physical world and honoring the time that they spent here on Earth.
Here are three celebratory holidays for October 31st:
The decorative ‘Day of the Dead’ in Mexico (celebrated on the days October 31 – November 2). This holiday is a time for family and friends to gather in respect of those who have passed away.
‘All Hallows’ Eve’ by the Christian and Catholic church (falling on the day before November 1st which is referred to as “All Saints’ Day”).
Samhain for the magical folk (which is the New Years Eve for Pagans and Wiccans). Samhain also means “Summer’s End” and is the celebration of the end of the harvest season and essentially the start of Winter.
October 31st is a time of personal reflection and re-birth. November is a new start in many people’s lives and provides a clean slate in many cultures. Whether you celebrate Halloween, Samhain, Day of the Dead, All Hollows’ Eve, or one of many other holidays; have a wonderful end to your October (which is my favorite month).
I have recorded 13 months of meditations for you based on the Celtic calendar and written by author, Sharlyn Hidalgo (interview below). They are beautifully written visualizations for you to use moving into the magic of each month and each season. I hope that you take the time to enjoy them all as each Celtic calendar arrives. The very first month of the year starts tomorrow, November 1st, so go have a listen!
Please COMMENT below to tell me what holiday you celebrate and if you are up to anything fun and creative for Halloween. Remember to keep your pets safe and bring them inside. Halloween is not a good time for pets for many reasons (fireworks, loud noises, kids trick-or-treating in costumes, animal theft, etc), so make sure they are safe!
Have a wonderful November! Also, if you were wondering… the photo above was taken with only the light of the full moon!
